Atrii (Halls)_2016/2017

Engraving on glass.
Wall installation with shadows.

The Halls project originates from the previous and parallel Windows project.

It partly stems from a personal obsession, the same which brings me to love windows and glass walls, that sense of expectation/separation and contemplation which they represent for me. These are the elements that I’m interested in experiencing in my work.

The glass windows of the entryways let the light in, that we see down the hall as if we were to enter a small tunnel. The halls often give access to gardens (at best) or common rooms of the inhabitants of the building. The glass windows often take to entrances and stairs that lead to apartments.

The foyer is designed to welcome, accommodate and let a guest wait.

In my research on the hallways I intend to develop the idea of a passage that is a wait. A wait that it is a sense of welcome, as access and door towards others.

For those who live in the building, the entranceway is a passage where practical things happen (concierge services, packages arriving, various communications) but not only.

The hallway is a place where you are welcomed or where to linger. But it is also a place where particular things happen. In the halls of buildings: kisses and hidden loves, condos quarrels, boys waiting for each other and chatting before the stairs. An intimate place but at the same time neutral in which everyday things happen, to which by now we do not pay much attention.

Glimpsing the entrance hall when the door is open we are given the chance to see an interior in which the inhabitants of the building stop or pass through. Fleetingly entering this intimacy makes you develop a non-voyeuristic voyeurism that catches my interest.

The images were collected in the buildings where I lived and in the area where I live now. As if it were an intimate map of some areas of Milan that I frequented, or cities that I experienced even though for a short time.

Images stolen in streets that I cross through each day or by chance while walking and drifting at random.

Starting from this work, I developed the project ATTESA (Wait), part of the open archive ATRII, a collective project that investigates, through contemporary art, the concept of atrium or andron from a processual and theoretical point of view.
